Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre, Paris, France
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre, or Basilica of the National Vow, sits at the summit of Butte Montmartre. Located in the Clignancourt district of the 18th arrondissement, it is one of Paris's most iconic religious buildings. The basilica is a sanctuary of Eucharistic adoration and divine mercy and belongs to the Archdiocese of Paris.
Construction began after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. In 1873, the National Assembly declared the basilica of public utility. The goal was to restore faith and provide a moral foundation for the country after the war. The church was officially completed in 1923, symbolizing both political and religious renewal.
Standing at 130 meters above sea level, the basilica offers panoramic views of Paris. Its dome, which rises to 83 meters, makes it highly visible across the city. The church’s location and height allow it to dominate the skyline.
With nearly eleven million visitors and pilgrims annually, the basilica is the second most visited religious site in Paris. Only Notre-Dame Cathedral attracts more visitors. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart continues to be a major religious and cultural landmark in the city.
