Essen Minster, also known as Essen Cathedral, stands in the city centre of Essen, Germany, and it serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Essen in the Diocese of the Ruhr. Moreover, it stands on Burgplatz and it holds dedication to Saints Cosmas and Damian along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, which strengthens its religious importance in the region.
In addition, the minster began as the collegiate church of Essen Abbey around 845, and Bishop Altfrid of Hildesheim founded the religious community that shaped the early development of Essen. Furthermore, builders constructed the present Gothic hall church after 1275 using light-coloured sandstone, and it reflects important medieval architectural traditions that continue to define its appearance today.
Moreover, the structure retains the octagonal westwork and crypt from the earlier Ottonian building, and later reconstruction after World War II restored damaged sections while preserving its historical character. Therefore, the building combines original medieval elements with carefully restored architecture.
Finally, the cathedral treasury attracts visitors because it contains the famous Golden Madonna, and this artwork represents one of the most important religious sculptures in Europe and highlights the artistic heritage of the minster.

Essen has excellent road connectivity through Germany’s autobahn network, especially the A40, A42, and A52 highways.
