Saint-Antonin Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Pamiers, located in the Ariège department of southwestern France. It serves as the seat of the Diocese of Pamiers, Couserans, and Mirepoix, providing leadership and guidance for the region.
Originally, the church honored Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. In 1384, locals called it Sainte-Marie du Mercadal, meaning "of the market," because of its location near the town’s central marketplace. This name reflected its importance to the daily life of the community.
In 1499, church authorities elevated the building to cathedral status. At that time, they rededicated it to Saint Antonin, whose veneration became central to Pamiers. Over the centuries, the cathedral witnessed social changes, restorations, and growth in the town. It remained a key site for worship, ceremonies, and diocesan events.
After the French Revolution, the cathedral became state property. The Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) manages it today, ensuring its maintenance and protection. The Architect of the Buildings of France oversees restorations and preservation of this historic monument.
The French government officially listed Saint-Antonin Cathedral as a historical monument on August 9, 1906, highlighting its architectural, cultural, and religious significance. As a result, the cathedral continues to attract visitors who admire its history, spiritual importance, and architectural beauty while serving the faithful of the region.
