VabresCathedral, also known as Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur-et-Saint-Pierre de Vabres, stands in Vabres-l’Abbaye in Aveyron, France. It honors the Holy Saviour and Saint Peter and shows many centuries of local religious and community history. In 1317, church leaders created the Bishopric of Vabres, so the cathedral became the bishop’s main church and served as the religious center of the area until 1801, when officials ended the bishopric under the Concordat and joined the area to the Diocese of Rodez.
During the French Revolution in 1793, Revolutionary soldiers entered the cathedral, removed its marble altar to build a monument for Jean-Paul Marat, and then set fire to the building. Afterward, local people repaired and restored the church, keeping important parts from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries that still show its medieval design. Today, the building serves as an active parish church, and in 1992 the French government listed it as a historic monument to protect its history and architecture.
