St. John’s Church, known in German as Johanniskirche, stands beneath Mainz Cathedral in the historical center of Mainz, Germany. It represents one of the most important early medieval churches in Central Europe. Moreover, it reflects the deep religious origins of the region and the early development of episcopal authority. Historians identify it as the oldest surviving church in Mainz. They also recognize it as the oldest cathedral structure in present-day Germany. This status highlights its exceptional historical and architectural importance. The church dates back more than 1100 years. It originally served as the first episcopal seat of the Bishop of Mainz.

The building shows a mainly Carolingian architectural style. Later generations added modifications across centuries. These changes created a layered appearance with Romanesque and medieval influences. The church contains three naves. It preserves early Christian architectural principles.
