Construction started in 1895 and concluded in 1930 under the guidance of architect Joseph Cuypers. It replaced the smaller St. Joseph church in the Jansstraat, which had served Catholics during a period of limited religious freedom.

Before that, the Sint-Bavokerk had been Haarlem’s main Catholic church. However, during the Alteratie of 1578, it was taken over and repurposed for Protestant use. This forced the Catholic community to worship in smaller, hidden spaces for centuries. They lacked a central building that reflected their faith and heritage.

As tolerance gradually increased in the 19th century, Catholic leaders planned a cathedral that would reflect their renewed presence.
