Bari Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Sabinus (Italian: Duomo di Bari or Cattedrale di San Sabino), stands in Bari, southern Italy. It serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sabinus, Bishop of Canosa. His relics were brought to the cathedral in the 9th century. Despite the fame of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, this cathedral holds significant historical importance in the region.
Construction of the cathedral began in the late 12th century and finished by the early 13th century. The building replaced the earlier Imperial Byzantine cathedral, destroyed in 1156 by William I of Sicily, also known as William the Wicked (il Malo). Traces of the original Byzantine pavement remain under the nave. You can see them to the right of the transept.
The cathedral blends Romanesque and Apulian architectural styles. This combination makes it an important regional monument. It remains one of Bari’s primary landmarks.
Bari Cathedral, officially called the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of San Sabino, is an Italian national monument. The cathedral represents both religious devotion and Bari’s rich historical legacy. It continues to attract pilgrims and tourists. Visitors admire its history, architecture, and art.
