The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace stands proudly in Murillo Square, La Paz, Bolivia. It serves as both a religious and cultural landmark. Construction officially began on March 24, 1835, after officials decided to demolish the original cathedral in 1831. They took this step because the old building had structural damage, including cracks and a collapsed presbytery. Consequently, they needed a safer, stronger structure.

The original cathedral, made of stone, lime, and brick, took about 70 years to complete. It finally finished in 1692. Later, the new cathedral opened in 1925, marking Bolivia’s first independence centenary. However, artisans continued decorating the interior until 1932, adding intricate details to its five large naves. Over time, the cathedral became a symbol of both faith and national pride.

Then, in 1989, the church opened its two lateral towers. This event coincided with Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Bolivia. Because of this visit, the cathedral gained even greater religious importance. Next to the cathedral’s left side, visitors find a chapel housing the remains of Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz. He was the supreme protector of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. Therefore, this connection adds significant historical depth to the site.
