Basilica of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Michalovce, Slovakia
The Basilica of the Descent of the Holy Spirit stands in Michalovce, a city in eastern Slovakia. It belongs to the Greek Catholic Church and is closely associated with the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. Although it is not the parish church for the town, the basilica holds deep spiritual and historical importance.
Construction of the church took place between 1934 and 1935, following a neo-Byzantine architectural style. Bishop Alexander Stojka of Mukachevo led its consecration on September 29, 1935, alongside Redemptorist Bishop Nikolay Čarnecký. Artist Volodymyr Sičynsky designed the interior, while Jozef Bokšay painted the icons, giving the church a sacred and artistic character.
Between 1950 and 1990, the communist regime suppressed the Greek Catholic Church, and the Orthodox Church assumed control of the building. It functioned as the cathedral of Michael’s Orthodox Eparchy during that time. In 1990, the Greek Catholic Church regained control and restored its original mission.
Today, the basilica houses the relics of Blessed Methodius Dominik Trček, a Redemptorist martyr. Pilgrims visit throughout the year, especially on Pentecost and August 25, which honors Blessed Methodius. These feast days feature special liturgies and draw visitors seeking spiritual healing and inspiration.
In March 2012, church authorities announced its elevation to the rank of minor basilica. The official proclamation took place on May 27, 2012, in a solemn public celebration. Since then, the basilica has welcomed both local faithful and international pilgrims.
Visitors often come to admire the art, reflect in silence, or participate in prayer. The basilica remains a living testimony to faith, endurance, and the spiritual heritage of the Greek Catholic community in Slovakia.
