The Basilica of San Simplicio rises in Olbia, a historic town in northern Sardinia, and represents one of the island’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Builders began its construction in the late 11th century. They selected a small hill that stood outside the old city walls. This hill had already served as a cemetery since the Carthaginian period. Therefore, the site held cultural and spiritual meaning long before the basilica appeared. Before this church, a Palaeo-Christian structure had already occupied the area. Historians date it between 594 and 611. Furthermore, that early church stood near a Roman temple, adding another layer of religious continuity.

During the first phase, the builders completed the apse, the thick outer walls, and most of the interior columns.
