Saint Peter’s Basilica (Basílica de São Pedro) sits in Toural Square, Guimarães. It belongs to the parish of Oliveira, São Paio e São Sebastião. Moreover, it stands as a symbol of devotion and history.

The idea for this basilica began in the early 1600s. However, actual work only started in 1737. By 1750, church leaders blessed the completed chapel. Still, construction continued well into the 1800s. Eventually, by 1884, most of it was done. Yet the façade remained incomplete. Also, workers never built the second bell tower.

During the Napoleonic Wars, difficult times hit the church. Soldiers took over and turned it into a stable. Even so, in 1751, Pope Benedict XIV gave it basilica status. This recognition elevated its role within Portuguese Catholicism.

The design shows classic neoclassical style—clean, plain, and balanced. Although it lacks rich decoration, the simplicity brings quiet beauty. Additionally, the building reflects dignity in its minimal details.

Sadly, on 1 December 1942, tragedy struck. After the “Missa das Almas,” hundreds came to receive food. They gathered on the top floor for soup and bread. As more people entered, the floor gave way. The collapse killed ten people. Many more suffered injuries. That day left a deep scar on the town.

Nevertheless, the basilica continued to serve its people. It became not only a church but also a place of memory. Locals still remember the tragic event with solemn respect.

Today, the basilica remains open and active. Visitors admire its history and architecture. Meanwhile, worshippers find peace and strength inside. Though simple, the building tells a powerful story. It reminds all who enter of faith, loss, and survival. And so, Saint Peter’s Basilica continues to stand with quiet grace..
