The people fled to the countryside, seeking refuge in a place still known as “Baracchini.” Fear and uncertainty filled the air as they tried to escape the relentless sickness.

On July 8, a miraculous event occurred. The sound of church bells ringing echoed through the valley, even though the old parish church had been abandoned due to the epidemic. Intrigued and filled with hope, the townspeople rushed back to the town. Upon their arrival, they saw an elderly bishop-like figure standing atop the bell tower, ringing the bells with solemn intent. As they approached, the figure vanished into thin air, leaving them in awe. At that moment, the plague miraculously ceased.

Believing that Saint Nicholas of Bari had delivered them from death, the people vowed to honor him by building a grand church. They did not hesitate or delay. Driven by their promise, they began construction, uniting the community in faith and purpose. Through determination and devotion, they completed the basilica, which still stands today as a symbol of their gratitude.

One of the original bells holds a handprint, which the locals call the “Hand of San Nicolò.” Many believe that the saint left the mark as a sign of his intervention during the miracle. Visitors to the basilica can still view this sacred imprint, a lasting reminder of the town’s miraculous salvation.
