The Basilica di Sant’Andrea Apostolo is a remarkable 18th-century Neoclassical Roman Catholic co-cathedral located in Subiaco, Lazio, Italy. This church replaced an earlier building dedicated to Saint Abundius. Pope Pius VI consecrated the new church in 1789, marking an important event in the town's history. The pope’s coat of arms appears above the main portal, symbolizing his involvement in the church's consecration.
The earlier church featured frescoes painted by Manente and Caracci. Unfortunately, these works did not survive the passage of time and were lost when the church was replaced. Despite this, the basilica's design showcases the elegance and grandeur typical of Neoclassical architecture, with clean lines and symmetrical proportions that reflect the era's artistic vision.
During World War II, the basilica suffered extensive damage, and much of it was destroyed. The church was left in ruins, along with many other historical landmarks across Europe. However, the people of Subiaco remained determined to rebuild their beloved basilica. In the 1950s, the church was reconstructed, carefully restoring its original structure and design.
