The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Rock rises above the town of Graus, in the province of Huesca, Aragon. It stands on Morral Rock, offering wide views of the town and nearby hills. Because of its high position, visitors spot it from far away.
The original church first appeared in records in 1186. Back then, people called it Sancta María de Villa. After the Christian reconquest, King Sancho Ramírez gave it to the Monastery of San Victorián. As a result, the site gained spiritual importance.
Later, in the 16th century, the town decided to build a new church. Builders worked from 1538 to 1560. They created a structure with Renaissance elements and a lovely cloister. Moreover, they wanted the new church to show Graus’s growing role in religion.
Architect Joan Tellet designed the chapel of San Juan de Letrán. He used ideas from Sebastián Serlio, an Italian artist. Because of that, the chapel reflects Renaissance style clearly.
By 1581, the basilica became free from monastic control. The town council and the Bishop of Barbastro then guided it. This change gave Graus more local control over its main church.
Inside, visitors see peaceful chapels and fine details. The chapel of San Juan de Letrán holds a 17th-century altarpiece. It remains the only original one left.
In 1810, the church received the title of a minor basilica. During the Spanish Civil War, it suffered some damage. However, repairs in 1940 and 1974 restored its beauty.
Today, the basilica welcomes both pilgrims and travelers. Some come for prayer. Others come for history and views. Either way, they leave deeply moved.
