Santa Maria del Castello is the main patron saint of Castrovillari and Pollino. Every year, the town celebrates her feast on May 1st. The Bishop of Cassano all' Jonio leads the solemn pontifical Mass. The mayor hands over the keys to the city. At the same time, the town displays the gonfalon of the city. Before the feast, the town holds a solemn novena from April 21 to April 29.
On April 30th, the simulacrum of the Madonna della Pace moves in procession. This procession is a key tradition. At noon, the town celebrates the Mass of the Necklace. The faithful offer gold. Then, they crown the Madonna’s effigy. This act shows deep devotion.
On January 3, 2022, Pope Francis elevated the sanctuary to a Pontifical Minor Basilica. The ceremony took place on March 25, 2022. It occurred during the Eucharistic celebration. The Solemnity of the Annunciation marked the event. Bishop Francesco Savino of the Diocese of Cassano all' Jonio led the ceremony. It was a historic moment for the sanctuary.
