The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu, officially called Arantzazu in Basque, is a Catholic Marian sanctuary located in Oñate, in the Gipuzkoa province of the Basque Country, Spain. It is devoted to the Virgin of Arantzazu, the patron saint of the province. According to legend, the Virgin appeared at this site in 1468, marking the beginning of a centuries-long tradition of veneration.
Surrounded by mountains and dense vegetation, the sanctuary stands 750 meters above sea level. This natural setting adds to its peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Since 1514, the Franciscan Order has been responsible for the care and religious activity of the sanctuary.
The current basilica, constructed during the 1950s, represents a turning point in modern religious architecture in Spain. Unlike traditional churches, it combines bold design with contemporary art and sculpture. This makes it not only a religious destination but also a cultural and artistic landmark.
Several renowned artists contributed to the basilica’s design. Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, and Néstor Basterretxea, all internationally recognized, played key roles. Their collaboration brought together faith and artistic innovation in a striking and memorable way.
Over time, devotion to Our Lady of Arantzazu has spread far beyond Spain. Communities in countries like the Philippines, Argentina, and Mexico have adopted her as part of their spiritual life. As a result, the sanctuary’s influence now reaches across continents.
Today, pilgrims and visitors continue to travel to Arantzazu. They come not only for spiritual reflection but also to witness the harmony of faith, history, and art that defines this extraordinary place.
